BIG UPS: Spike Jonze, Ty Evans & Team Lakai

“LAKAIROMANIA” from Marc Ritzema on Vimeo.

Kids, don’t play with fire – unless Spike Jonze asks you to skate in a film.

Big ups to Spike Jonze and Ty Evans. Obviously, they are the same guys behind Girl Skateboards’ Yeah Right and Lakai’s Fully Flared. Recently, they released a new short that once again captures Lakai’s Skate Team. Their new effort also pushes the envelope of Art + Function (and shooting without safety goggles). For posterity’s sake, see below their work that was incorporated into Unkle’s “Heaven” clip.

1st Annual Good Vibration Surf & Music Day

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Dear Matuse Family,

It was a big turn out in Canngu over the weekend. With the concept paying respect to boards from 1981-82′ meant no thrusters. People showed up in there 80′s fashion and enjoyed the free flowing tiger beer all day. By the finals everyone agreed to can the twin-fins and ride only single-fins with no leashes. Asher Pacey from OZ was ripping it up and ended up winning a brand new Deus single-fin. Big Congrats!

The awards were held at the grand opening of “Deus the Temple of Enthusiasm” down the road. Free flowing Mojitos ran like a river all night.

Big shout out to Tipi, Jake, Ty, Dustin and at least ten more other people that made this event happen. Big ups to the sponsors, DRIFTER, RAW, RYTHM, DEUS, MATUSE, ISC, CSC, TIGER BEER, AND LINES MAG.

Aloha, Mikala

Tudor Contest

Dear Matuse Family,

Sending some East Coast loving. Here are a few highlights from Joel’s 1st ever longboard event. Good Karma prevailed, as we were gifted with Hurricane Danielle’s overhead waves, good weather and loads of unique humans. Saw some amazing surfing as expected and word on the street was that the log jam was one of the best displaces of longboarding ever seen. Hats off to Mr. Tudor for hosting a great event, also to Justin Quintal for winning and all the rest of the shredders for shredding.

Until the next event, Adios… Chris 111

After a few swells on the West Coast it seems that the place to be now is the East Coast of the US. Hurricane Danielle delivered some fun waves and it looks like Hurricane Earl is gonna send some good energy as you read this. Matuse Family Members, Luke Ditella and Jeff Myers, were on it and each nabbed a photo in the latest ESM photo reel. Be sure to check back for photos coming in from Hurricane Earl . HAPPENING: DAVE KINSEY X JOSH LINER GALLERY

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Dave Kinsey

Who: Matuse Family Member, Dave Kinsey
What: Dave Kinsey’s first solo show in nearly 2 years
When: Thursday, September 9th from 6-9pm
Where: Joshua Liner Gallery, 548 W. 28th St., 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10001; (212)-244-7415; http://joshualinergallery.com/

Why (In Dave Kinsey’s words): In this new body of work I primarily explore emotional and environmental boundaries, as I perceive them, in the context of the growing discord between humanity and nature. The state of the world today concerns me and I want try to affect, if not change, at least a feeling of realization or understanding when people view my work.

I have also spent time on cyclical issues, namely in the Continuum series, which clearly represents the reality of our earth-bound physical nature; beauty and death are ultimately dancing partners.

While I have thought about these things throughout my life, my recent experience in the isolated rural mountain community of Three Rivers, California has brought this reality to the forefront—living in nature allows a perspective rarely gained sitting in traffic in L.A. on your iPhone.

In terms of actual method, I approach each piece initially with an unconscious and somewhat spontaneous action to create what I consider to be “the perfect abstraction,” made up of energetic colors and strong blacks. From that point I begin to add representational forms, line work and shapes to complete the narrative.

This is my largest and most extensive body work in nearly three years. This show was produced in two studios, Los Angeles and Three Rivers, California. The works are primarily made up of acrylic, spray paint, paper, wood and ink on canvas. – D. Kinsey, 2010
